REAL LIFE WEDDING CEREMONY: KATE & KIRSTINE

Ceremonies by Nikki Kulin, Costa Celebrant - Real Life Wedding Ceremonies

I first met Kate and Kirstine during their wedding planning visit to Nerja back in October 2017, just over 18 months before their wedding ceremony. From the outset, they told me of their idea to use a colour theme of lilac, in remembrance of Kirstine’s beloved Mother, Wendy, who had passed away, and their ceremony to take place in her special place of Nerja where many fond memories were held.

Both gorgeous brides were walked down the aisle individually by their fathers, onto the stunning terrace and backdrop overlooking the Mediterranean sea and the iconic Balcon de Europa in Nerja.

Kate and Kirstine had opted to have a heart shaped piece of Wendy’s wedding dress inside their dresses and a special memory table next to the ceremony area.

There was also a special message from sister in law, Katrina, on behalf of the family in Australia who couldn’t be with them that day.

Their beautiful love story, from meeting on adjoining sunbeds in Sharm-el-Sheikh, to their friendship blossoming into love, Kate and Kirstine soon became inseparable.

A year after they met, they went on a short break to Beadnall in Northumbria and Kirstine had planned to propose during a romantic evening walk. She had packed a rucksack with champagne, candles and a Chinese lantern with their names and the date they met written on it to symbolise their love. It was, during that lovely moonlit September evening, that Kirstine proposed with the ring sparkling in the moonlight and Kate accepted.

After exchanging traditional promises, their ring bearers, Finn & Lewis, had the important job of bringing the rings for Kate and Kirstine to exchange.

Include a handfasting in your wedding ceremony

Many ideas had been considered by the couple and they decided to incorporate a Handfasting Ceremony within the ceremony, symbolic of the bond which they share and the tie of commitment which they made to one another.

These two gorgeous brides shared special moments.

This fastening of hands is steeped in tradition and magical meaning and is in fact where the saying ‘tying the knot’ originates from. It was also perfect to include Kirstine’s daughter, Natalie as well as special guests.Wendy’s best friend, Jackie, was unaware that she would be invited to place the lilac ribbon in remembrance and was delighted to do so

Kate & Kirstine said: Kate & I had our first meeting with Nikki back in Oct 2017. We immediately loved her warm nature & enthusiasm. Nikki showed a genuine interest in our love story, our wedding plans & of course our ceremony. Nikki was able to give us many different examples of the types of ceremony and how we could include a tribute to my Mum who had suddenly passed away early that year. After we returned to the UK, Nikki was often in touch sending different ideas and suggestions for us to consider. We met up with Nikki again a year later and had another great meeting. Nikki always made us feel like we were the only couple in the world planning a wedding, she made us feel happy, excited and confident that the ceremony would be perfect. Kate and I travelled to Nerja a week before our wedding. Nikki was in touch checking if we needed anything & checking we were OK. On Saturday 25th May 2019, we celebrated our wedding at Cochran’s terrace. The wedding was a lilac theme, as it was my Mum’s favourite colour, and Nikki also went to the effort to wear a lilac dress and looked beautiful. After the ceremony, all the guests commented how perfect it had been and how fantastic Nikki was. She also mentioned that my Mum would have been there if Heaven wasn’t so far away, which meant a lot. We had a handfasting ceremony and had lost the ribbons somehow on the day. Nikki met us for a coffee a few days later and redid the ribbons for us again which meant the world to us and we will keep forever.

We would highly recommend Nikki to anyone planning to get married, she is warm, calm and caring. Thank you so, so much Nikki!
